Job summary

Royal Mail in Ampthill area is hiring a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) on a fixed-term 12-month contract. The role covers 35 hours per week on a rotating shift, including Sundays, with a starting rate of £13.68 per hour plus paid overtime, and you’ll deliver letters and parcels by van and on foot.

You’ll wear a uniform, train fully, and work outdoors in all weathers, building relationships with customers while handling routes that may vary with demand.

Qualifications

• Must have a full manual UK driving licence (max 6 penalty points).
• Able to pass a driving assessment for Royal Mail vans.
• Physically fit to walk long distances and lift 10kg+ mailbags.
• Reliable, self-motivated and customer-focused.
• Willing to work outdoors in all weathers and on a rotating shift.

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

You’ll be required to work Sundays at Bedford Delivery Office.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily

• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
