Job summary

Connex Education Partnership in Leeds is seeking a PMLD Tutor to deliver personalised 1:1 tutoring across home or school settings, with September start and flexible hours. You will plan, deliver and assess bespoke intervention programmes focused on communication, sensory development, independence and life skills, using multi-sensory and assistive technology approaches.

A proactive, safeguarding-conscious approach is essential, with relevant SEND qualifications and DBS clearance; both part-time

Qualifications

• Experience delivering tutoring or interventions for children and young people with SEN/PMLD.
• Knowledge of personalised learning and differentiated intervention strategies.
• Experience with multi-sensory and communication-focused approaches.

• Monitor pupil progress and adapt plans to evolving needs.
• Collaborate with parents, schools and external professionals.

Job description

Role: PMLD Tutor (September Start)
Location: Face-to-Face, in Home or School, Leeds/ Wakefield/ Bradford
Hours: Monday to Friday, Flexible Hours
Contract: Part-Time/Full-Time Options Available

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver personalised 1:1 tutoring and intervention sessions for students with PMLD needs, supporting engagement, communication, and individual progress.
• Plan, deliver, and assess highly individualised intervention programmes focused on communication, sensory development, functional skills, independence, and life skills.
• Develop and adapt bespoke learning activities using multi-sensory, creative, and therapeutic approaches tailored to each learner’s needs and EHCP outcomes.
• Use intervention strategies that support cognition, communication, emotional regulation, social interaction, and personal development.
• Incorporate music, sensory play, visual supports, and practical activities to encourage participation and meaningful learning experiences.
• Use alternative communication approaches including Makaton, PECS, visual timetables, and assistive technology to support pupil engagement and interaction.
• Monitor and record pupil progress, adapting intervention plans and tutoring strategies to meet evolving needs and targets.
• Promote independence, confidence, self-esteem, and positive communication through targeted interventions and consistent support.
• Create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment that encourages engagement and celebrates progress at every level.
• Work collaboratively with parents, carers, schools, and external professionals to ensure consistency and continuity of support.
• Contribute to pupil reviews, progress meetings, and EHCP-focused discussions where appropriate.
• Maintain safeguarding, confidentiality, and professional standards at all times.

Requirements

• Experience delivering tutoring, interventions, or support for children and young people with SEMH, SEN, and/or PMLD needs.
• Strong understanding of personalised learning and differentiated intervention approaches.
• Confidence using multi-sensory and communication-focused strategies to engage learners with complex needs.
• Knowledge or experience of alternative communication systems such as Makaton, PECS, AAC, or assistive technology.
• Ability to build positive relationships and motivate learners with varying levels of communication and engagement.
• Excellent communication, organisational, and record-keeping skills.
• Patience, empathy, flexibility, and a nurturing approach to intervention support.
• Relevant qualifications in education, SEND, tutoring, support work, or related fields.
