Job summary

Ellison Institute of Technology in Oxford is seeking a Controlled Environment Lead to build and oversee our plant growth and phenotyping facilities. This foundational role will establish expertise, processes, facilities and a growing team, reporting to the Director, Technology Development.

You will personally perform greenhouse, chamber, and field activities at first, then scale operations while guiding a multidisciplinary research program to translate lab discoveries into real-world

Qualifications

• PhD plus at least 5 years hands-on greenhouse experience.
• Deep expertise in controlled-environment operations.
• Experience with data capture, QC, and research protocols.
• Knowledge of GMO handling and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

• Ensure controlled environments are steady, reproducible and well-documented; develop contingency plans.
• Grow healthy plants and troubleshoot abiotic/pest/pathogen issues to produce actionable data.
• Oversee planting, transplanting, irrigation, fertilising, sampling, and trial logistics.
• Contribute to collection of phenotypic data and ensure rigorous data management.
• Own pest scouting, pesticide application, safety and regulatory compliance; develop phytosanitary procedures.
• Maintain organized inventory of materials and SOPs; support GMO and gene-edited material stewardship.
• Provide technical support to scientific teams and participate in experimental design aligning with research goals.
• Lead design and potential hiring within the Event Validation team; recruit and supervise future staff.
