Location: Client's home and local community

We are currently seeking a dedicated support worker to provide buddy support for a 12-year-old boy with a hypoxic brain injury who lives here in Weston-Super-Mare. He is non-verbal, but communicates effectively using Makaton and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and can clearly express his wishes. He is a bright, spirited and active young person who thoroughly enjoys a wide range of activities. These include visits to the arcade, play areas, parks, bowling, and trips to The Cinema, where he particularly enjoys expressing his enjoyment by dancing in the aisles. He also has a keen interest in banger racing with his dad and enjoys riding horses. He has a loving family who are very close to him.

What We’re Looking For:

The ideal candidate will be active, enjoy spending time outdoors, and feel comfortable around animals, as the client's family has dogs, horses, and rabbits.

A nurturing and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with children, especially those with additional needs.

Experience or knowledge of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and Makaton communication methods would be advantageous.

Experience of positive behaviour support would be advantageous

A flexible approach and willingness to adapt activities based on the child’s moods and preferences.

A commitment to promoting a fun and safe environment. Patience, creativity, and the ability to inspire and motivate.

Previous experience working with children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is essential for this role. Due to the part-time hours, this position would be particularly well-suited for individuals currently working or seeking employment within SEN schools. The successful applicant must be willing to undergo an enhanced DBS check.

The initial hours for this position are 8.5 hours per week during school term times, specifically on Mondays from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM and Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. During school holidays, the hours will increase to Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM each day. Please note that these hours could increase further in the future.
