Job summary

Novus, the LTE Group prison education provider at HMP Liverpool, is hiring a Performing Arts and PSD Teacher on a permanent, full-time basis for 37 hours per week. You will deliver a PSD-focused curriculum using your Performing Arts background to build resilience, employability and confidence, while safeguarding and promoting inclusion across a diverse learner group.

Qualifications

  • Must hold or work towards a recognised teaching qualification within 12 months (e.g. PGCE).
  • Experience delivering PSD or education/personal development programmes.
  • Background in Performing Arts desirable.
  • Level 2 literacy and numeracy qualification required.

We’re looking for a dedicated, learner-focused and enthusiastic Performing Arts and Personal Social Development (PSD) Teacher to join our prison education team.

While your Performing Arts experience will help bring energy, creativity and engagement to the classroom, the primary focus of this role will be delivering PSD sessions that support learners to build resilience, independence, employability skills and the confidence needed for successful rehabilitation and progression. We have a great opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Liverpool, working as a Performing Arts and PSD Teacher. This role is offered on a permanent, full-time basis, working 37 hours per week.

HMP Liverpool is a Category B Male prison based in Walton, Liverpool. The prison itself has a strong local identity. Upon arrival, large murals illustrate the city and its surroundings. The teams' aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe, and where causes of prison stress are minimised. The prison’s mission is to provide a secure, safe, and rehabilitative environment that encourages positive change and prepares inmates for a successful reintegration into society.

Role Responsibilities

As a Performing Arts and PSD Teacher, you will use your creativity and Performing Arts background to engage learners, while the main teaching focus will be the delivery of Personal Social Development (PSD). This exciting role is central to supporting learners as they develop the personal, social, academic and employability skills required to progress successfully into further learning, vocational training and employment.

The successful candidate will deliver a broad and engaging PSD curriculum designed to build confidence, resilience, independence, communication skills and positive behaviours. Drawing on Performing Arts techniques where appropriate, you will create inclusive and motivating learning experiences that encourage self-expression, teamwork and personal development, preparing learners for successful reintegration and lifelong learning.

Skills, Qualifications, Experience and Attributes

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

  • Be passionate about supporting learners to achieve their potential and committed to safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Hold or be willing to work towards a recognised teaching qualification within 12 months (i.e. PGCE)
  • Hold a relevant subject specialist qualification in PSD, or have experience of delivering education, training or personal development programmes
  • Have a background or teaching experience in Performing Arts (Desirable)
  • Hold a minimum of Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
  • Demonstrate understanding, or have experience in, creating stimulating, vibrant environments which are conducive to learning and motivational for learners
  • Have a good previous track record of achieving quality targets and engaging in positive team working
  • Produce accurate and timely reports when required
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Have an ability to motivate and enthuse learners from diverse backgrounds in the subject matter
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills and administrative skills to prioritise workload and meet deadlines/targets
