Job summary

BIMM University in Birmingham is looking for a Performing Arts Technician to support the day-to-day operation of our specialist facilities. You'll ensure equipment and spaces are maintained and ready to support teaching, learning and student activity.

You will provide practical technical guidance to students and staff, helping to run workshops, support productions and manage asset records with a flexible, solutions-focused approach.

Qualifications

• Experience working within performing arts, theatre, live events or a specialist performing arts education environment.
• Practical knowledge of technical theatre, performance production and specialist equipment and facilities.
• Experience working with lighting, sound, staging and other production equipment.
• Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and respond to changing demands.
• Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
• A practical, solutions-focused approach and sound judgement for day-to-day issues.
• Ability to build effective working relationships with students, colleagues and contractors.
• Good digital skills including asset management or record-keeping systems.
• Ability to work independently while contributing as part of a wider team.
• Flexible and adaptable approach to work.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, configure and maintain specialist performing arts equipment and facilities to support teaching, learning and extracurricular activity.
• Deliver technical demonstrations, workshops and one-to-one support to help students develop production skills.
• Provide advice on effective use of equipment, rehearsal spaces, venues and production resources.
• Support performances, productions and events on and off campus, ensuring safety and technical requirements are met.
• Manage equipment loans and maintain asset, maintenance and usage records.
• Carry out routine inspections and minor repairs, escalating complex issues.
• Coordinate servicing with external contractors and suppliers.
• Support inductions and compliance checks for safe technical environments.
• Help maintain campus buildings and learning spaces, ensuring they are safe and welcoming.
• Maintain records using technical and asset management systems.
• Identify recurring issues and propose practical improvements.
• Share technical knowledge to promote consistent standards.

Performing Arts Technician

Location: Birmingham

Salary: £26,520 £32,240 per annum

About the Role

As a Performing Arts Technician, you will support the day-to-day operation of BIMM s specialist performing arts facilities, ensuring equipment, performance spaces and technical resources are maintained and ready to support teaching, learning and wider student activity.

You'll provide practical technical support and guidance to students and staff, helping to ensure facilities operate effectively, safely and in line with curriculum requirements.

What You'll Do:

• Support teaching, learning and extracurricular activity by preparing, configuring and maintaining specialist performing arts equipment and facilities.
• Deliver technical demonstrations, workshops and one-to-one support to help students develop their technical and production skills.
• Provide advice and guidance on the effective use of specialist equipment, rehearsal spaces, performance venues and production resources.
• Support performances, productions and events on and off campus where required, ensuring technical and safety requirements are met.
• Manage equipment loans and maintain accurate asset, maintenance and usage records.
• Carry out routine inspections, checks and minor repairs on technical equipment, escalating issues where specialist support is required.
• Liaise with external contractors and suppliers to coordinate servicing, maintenance and repair work.
• Support inductions, inspections and compliance checks to help maintain safe technical environments.
• Contribute to the upkeep, maintenance and physical presentation of campus buildings, facilities and learning environments, helping to ensure they remain safe, welcoming and fit for purpose.
• Maintain accurate records using relevant technical, asset management and compliance systems.
• Contribute to service improvements by identifying recurring issues and recommending practical solutions.
• Share technical knowledge with colleagues and support the delivery of consistent standards and working practices.

What You'll Bring:

Working Pattern

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week on a rotating shift basis, helping us provide consistent support across the day.

You ll work a mix of the following shifts:

• Early: 07:30AM 4:00PM
• Mid: 10:00AM 6:30PM
• Late: 1:00PM 9:30PM
