Job summary

BIMM University in Birmingham is seeking a Performing Arts Technician to support our specialist facilities, ensuring equipment and spaces are ready for teaching and student activity. You will provide practical technical support to students and staff, delivering demonstrations, maintaining equipment, managing loans, and coordinating with contractors to keep environments safe and fit for purpose.

Responsibilities

Performing Arts Technician Location : Birmingham Salary : £26,520 - £32,240 per annum

About the Role

As a Performing Arts Technician, you will support the day-to-day operation of BIMM's specialist performing arts facilities, ensuring equipment, performance spaces and technical resources are maintained and ready to support teaching, learning and wider student activity.

You'll provide practical technical support and guidance to students and staff, helping to ensure facilities operate effectively, safely and in line with curriculum requirements.

What You'll Do:

• Support teaching, learning and extracurricular activity by preparing, configuring and maintaining specialist performing arts equipment and facilities.
• Deliver technical demonstrations, workshops and one-to-one support to help students develop their technical and production skills.
• Provide advice and guidance on the effective use of specialist equipment, rehearsal spaces, performance venues and production resources.
• Support performances, productions and events on and off campus where required, ensuring technical and safety requirements are met.
• Manage equipment loans and maintain accurate asset, maintenance and usage records.
• Carry out routine inspections, checks and minor repairs on technical equipment, escalating issues where specialist support is required.
• Liaise with external contractors and suppliers to coordinate servicing, maintenance and repair work.
• Support inductions, inspections and compliance checks to help maintain safe technical environments.
• Contribute to the upkeep, maintenance and physical presentation of campus buildings, facilities and learning environments, helping to ensure they remain safe, welcoming and fit for purpose.
• Maintain accurate records using relevant technical, asset management and compliance systems.
• Contribute to service improvements by identifying recurring issues and recommending practical solutions.
• Share technical knowledge with colleagues and support the delivery of consistent standards and working practices.

What You'll Bring:

• Experience working within performing arts, theatre, live events or a specialist performing arts education environment.
• Practical knowledge of technical theatre, performance production and specialist performing arts equipment and facilities.
• Experience working with lighting, sound, staging and other production equipment.
• Good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads and respond to changing demands.
• Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
• A practical, solutions-focused approach and sound judgement when resolving day-to-day technical issues.
• The ability to build effective working relationships with students, colleagues, contractors and service teams.
• Good digital skills, including experience using technical, asset management or record-keeping systems.
• The ability to work independently while contributing positively as part of a wider team.
• A flexible and adaptable approach to work.

Working Pattern

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week on a rotating shift basis, helping us provide consistent support across the day.

You’ll work a mix of the following shifts: Early: 07:30AM - 4:00PM Mid: 10:00AM - 6:30PM Late: 1:00PM - 9:30PM.
