Job summary

Tem-Energy Limited is seeking a Tech Lead for our new Payments squad within Saldo, our Billing and Payments service. You will own the squad's delivery and set the standards it works to, while coding and reviewing work alongside senior and junior engineers.

You will shape the architecture, define operating models, and drive cost-to-process improvements as the service scales. This hands-on leadership role balances speed, quality and resilience.

Qualifications

• Track record as a tech lead owning squad delivery and standards.
• Experience writing design docs, reviewing PRs and ADRs, and solving problems hands-on while setting direction.
• Balance hands-on work with coaching junior engineers, maintaining quality and speed.
• Designing a team's ways of working from scratch balancing speed, quality and resilience.
• Owning cross-team sequencing and dependencies, diagnosing throughput problems.
• Comfort cutting through ambiguity to set technical direction and resolve blockers.
• Desirable: Payments systems experience.
• Desirable: Improving cost-to-process in high-volume services.
• Desirable: Taking a service from first version to scale.

Responsibilities

• We're hiring a Tech Lead for our brand new Payments squad, part of Saldo.
• Payments at tem works today, but it's a basic service. Build for scale and growth.
• You'll be the first tech lead in a squad with a senior engineer and three juniors, owning outcomes and standards.
• This is a hands-on role: write design docs, review code, solve hardest problems, and set technical direction.
• In 12 months, set architecture direction for growth and define squad operating model.
• Define how the squad works, balancing speed, quality and resilience.
• Lift the quality and speed bar for the whole squad, senior and junior engineers alike.
• Drive blockers to delivery and ensure work reaches stakeholders.
• Make payment accuracy and processing efficiency levers to reduce cost-to-process.
• Lead from the front line: specs, ADR feedback, PR reviews, and hands-on coding.
• Turn ambiguous areas into clear technical strategy and set the pace.
• Own sequencing and dependencies and keep work visible to stakeholders.
• Coach juniors and define what good looks like while tackling hard problems.
• Partner on people decisions with your manager.
