Job summary

London Hire Ltd is seeking a Passenger Assistant (Zero-hours) to support our Milton Keynes-based passenger services. You will assist the driver, help passengers board and alight, and monitor passengers' welfare during transit, including those in wheelchairs, following safety regulations.

The role is zero hours, with split shifts covering AM and PM transport. Training and a pension scheme apply after three months, with pro-rata earnings and monthly payments.

Responsibilities

• Assist the driver to ensure passenger safety and comfort.
• Help passengers board and alight, including those with disabilities, following safety requirements.
• Monitor and supervise passengers during transit; be responsible for welfare on board.
• Assist in operating passenger lift or other equipment as needed.
• Ensure wheelchairs are secured with appropriate belts or restraints.
• Communicate with passengers in a patient, informative manner.
• Report late running and incidents per depot processes.
• Keep the assigned vehicle secure while in use.
• Ensure communication equipment is used correctly for safe service operation.

London Hire Community Services provide accessible home-to-school transport services where our service users are unable to access public transport. Our services are run under a full passenger vehicle operator’s licence regulations.

We have built our service around principals and process that are recognised as industry standards. We take the safety of our passengers as well as our staff very seriously and have also put in place OHSAS 18001 that governs the way we manage Health and Safety in the workplace.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the driver wherever possible in a manner that ensures the safety and comfort of passengers.
• Assist passengers when embarking and disembarking the vehicle, including assisting service users who have disabilities, to alight the vehicle in accordance with Health and Safety requirements.
• Monitor and supervise passengers whilst in transit and being responsible for their welfare whilst on board.
• When necessary, assist in the operation of the passenger lift or other equipment that is used to assist passengers boarding and alighting the vehicle as required.
• Ensure any wheelchairs are correctly located and secured using suitable equipment.
• Ensure passengers in wheelchairs are secured with a full lap and diagonal safety belt or other securing equipment.
• Communicate with passengers and clients in a patient, informative, non-patronising manner.
• Report late running and incidents in line with depot processes.
• Ensure the vehicle allocated is always secure whilst in use.
• Ensure all communication equipment is correctly utilised ensuring the safe, smooth and efficient running of the service.

• Able to deliver the service with a patient and level-headed attitude.
• Ability to work in a team environment as well as confidence to work with minimum supervision and using own initiative.

What's on offer

• Zero hours – no fixed contractual hours, working on a split-shift basis covering AM and PM transport.
• Term-time only, rolled up holiday pay entitlement is 12.07% of gross pay relating to work completed. This will be paid to you each month, and there is no entitlement to other additional paid annual leave to be taken during school term weeks.
• There is no requirement to work during school holidays, although overtime may be available that will be paid in addition to your contractual earnings.
• Salaries are pro-rata - you will receive payment every month of the year (even in non-working periods!)
