Job summary

Barnsley Council’s Travel Assistance Service is hiring Passenger Assistants to support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. You will help ensure safe journeys between home and school and assist with transport to adult day care facilities when needed.

The role is approximately 18 hours per week, Monday to Friday, term time only, with split shifts covering journeys from home to school and back. Apply to join a team dedicated to safe, reliable travel.

The successful candidate will be required to speak English to an appropriate standard.

This role is defined as a safety critical role within the Drug & Alcohol Testing Procedure. You must therefore be willing to comply in accordance with this procedure.


Pensions Regulations have provisions to reduce pension payments in certain circumstances of those who return to work within local government service. If you are in receipt of a pension upon commencing employment with the authority, this may affect your pension entitlements and you should therefore seek advice from the relevant Pensions Authority.

Our Travel Assistance Service is a lifeline for nearly 1,000 children and adults across the borough. This is an exciting time to join our forward-thinking, dynamic team as we continue to grow and innovate. We are currently recruiting Passenger Assistants to join our busy, expanding team. In this role, you will provide essential travel assistance for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, ensuring safe journeys between home, school, or college, as well as transport to adult day care facilities when required.


What We Offer


  • Working Hours: Approximately 18 hours per week, Monday to Friday, during school term time, on split shifts to cover the journeys from home to school, and from school to home. This is a term time only position, approximately 39 weeks of the year.
