Job summary

South Gloucestershire Council is seeking a Passenger Assistant to support vulnerable children on school journeys. You will provide care, encouragement and reassurance, helping create a safe and positive travelling environment so each child arrives comfortably and securely.

Role involves supervising children, assisting with boarding and seat belts, recording concerns, and reporting to parents and schools. A DBS check is required and the position is zero-hours, with travel across designated

Qualifications

  • Essential experience of working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals.
  • Ability to interact with children in a calm, patient, caring and compassionate manner.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding principles and responsibilities or willingness to develop this knowledge.
  • Must be physically able to assist with boarding/leaving the vehicle and use of belts/equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise children on journeys to and from school, ensuring safety and wellbeing.
  • Assist with boarding/leaving the vehicle, seating, belts and any equipment as required.
  • Record and report concerns or incidents to parents, schools, transport providers and the Integrated Transport team.

How you'll make a difference

As a Passenger Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting vulnerable children on their journeys to and from school. Providing care, encouragement and reassurance, you will help create a safe, calm and positive travelling environment, ensuring each child arrives at their destination comfortably and securely.



What you will be doing


  • Supervising children throughout their journeys to and from school, you will ensure their safety, comfort and wellbeing at all times.

  • You will assist children when boarding and leaving the vehicle, assist with seat belts and any specialist equipment where required, and respond appropriately to individual needs to ensure a positive and inclusive travel experience.

  • It will be your responsibility to accurately record and report any concerns, incidents or issues, ensuring information is communicated promptly and appropriately to parents, schools, transport providers and the Integrated Transport team.



What we need from you


  • It is essential you have experience of working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals, with an understanding of how to provide appropriate support to meet a range of needs.

  • You will be able to interact with children in a calm, patient, caring and compassionate manner, building positive relationships and helping them feel safe, comfortable and supported during their journey.

  • We are looking for someone who has a knowledge of safeguarding principles and responsibilities, gained through previous experience or training, or can demonstrate a willingness and commitment to develop this knowledge as part of the role.

  • Due to the nature of this role, you must be physically able to support children when boarding and leaving the vehicle, assist with seat belts and specialist equipment where required, and provide appropriate practical support throughout the journey.



What you need to know


  • An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required for this post.

  • This is a variable (zero-hours) position.

  • You must be able to travel to designated pick-up and drop-off locations within South Gloucestershire. Therefore, you must reside within the South Gloucestershire area and clearly state your location within your application.



Interviews will take place regularly during November and early December.
