Job summary

The Academy Selsey, part of The Kemnal Academies Trust, is seeking a Part-Time Teaching Assistant to support students with Special Educational Needs. You will work with the Special Needs Team, help implement IEPs/IBPs, liaise with parents, and contribute to strategies that promote learning, confidence and independence at Key Stage 3–4.

This fixed-term post runs until January 29, 2027, with a flexible, caring approach and opportunities for professional development within a supportive school

Qualifications

The Role of the Teaching Assistant

To work with the Special Needs Team supporting the learning and/or emotional needs of students on the Individual Needs Register at School Support and those with Education, Health and Care Plans. This involves working in a variety of ways to support a diversity of difficulties which may include some personal care. To promote the students’ learning, confidence and independence. To liaise with parents, write reports and IEP’s and attend support strategy meetings as required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant

• Draw on knowledge of various forms of educational and social needs, to develop an understanding of the specific needs of the students concerned.
• Develop a working knowledge of the student’s statement including educational objectives and targets.
• Contribute to the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Individual Behaviour Plan (IBP), including negotiating, monitoring and reviewing targets and attending support strategy meetings.
• Support individuals or small groups of students withdrawn from lessons.
• Promote the student’s self-esteem and confidence.
• Develop a good working relationship and work co-operatively with subject teachers.
• Establish a supportive relationship with the students.
• Supporting staff to achieve constructive working relationships with students.
• Act as a reading or amanuensis for SEN students during examinations.
• Complete and file student support records.

• Previous experience supporting children or young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in an educational or care setting.
• Familiarity with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) and implementing individual target outcomes.
• A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach, with the ability to maintain a calm presence under pressure.
• Strong communication skills, able to build warm, trusting relationships with students, teachers, and parents.
• Flexibility and adaptability to adjust activities on the fly based on a child's mood, focus, or energy level.
• Proactive mindset, able to take initiative to support the class teacher while keeping the pupil’s individual needs at the centre.
