Job summary

Edith Cavell Primary School in London is seeking a motivated teaching assistant to support children with Special Educational Needs in KS2, alongside general classroom duties and light administrative tasks.

You will work closely with the class teacher and the SENCO to help pupils access the curriculum, develop independence and maintain positive, supportive relationships.

The role requires empathy, adaptability and a willingness to undertake appropriate training to enhance pupil outcomes.

About the Role:

We are seeking to appoint a motivated, caring and adaptable teaching assistant to support children with Special Educational Needs in KS2, in addition to providing general classroom assistance and undertaking general administrative duties. Experience of working with children with Special Educational Needs or a willingness to undertake appropriate training.

Main Expectations of the role:

Support for the Children

• Support pupils with Special Educational Needs, to access the curriculum in line with appropriate lesson plans/teacher direction
• To build and maintain positive relationships with pupils, supporting their emotional wellbeing, mental health and personal and social needs, acting as a role model.
• Be aware of and respond appropriately to individual pupil needs.
• Actively promote children’s independence, self-esteem, self-reliance and self-sufficiency.
• Use specialist skills and training to encourage children with SEN to benefit from the planned learning activities, including modifying and adapting the class teacher’s planned activities to meet the needs of specific pupils.
• To identify, prepare, locate and gather appropriate resources to support the adaptation of the curriculum to ensure effective access to learning for identified pupils, returning and putting away after use.

Support for the Teacher

• Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans and assist with the display of pupils’ work.
• Under the guidance of the class teacher to deliver learning activities to individuals and groups of pupils whilst actively promoting independence, self-esteem, self-sufficiency and self-reliance.
• Within the overall plan set by the class teacher to assist in devising and extending appropriate educational activities in presentation of the curriculum.

Support for the Curriculum

• To support the teaching of English, Mathematics or other specific curriculum areas as required.
• Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, advising activities according to pupil responses.

Support for the School

• To work collaboratively with colleagues as part of a professional team, in particular the class teacher, the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) and other teaching assistants;
• Participate in the annual review of EHCP’s and termly review of provision map, for specific children.
• Actively safeguard pupils by complying with 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' (KCSIE) and the school's safeguarding policy. Be alert to all forms of harm, including contextual safeguarding and peer-on-peer abuse, and report concerns immediately via CPOMS.
