An opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Assistant practitioner Medicine and Oncology Occupational Therapy Team, based on the City Campus.
You will be involved in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients that have complex physical and cognitive needs, working alongside a large multi-disciplinary team to support patients discharge from hospital. Some clerical and administration tasks will also be undertaken (eg keeping records, filing, photocopying). You are expected to work independently.
We are looking for an individual who has experience of working in therapies, within a health or social care setting. You must enjoy working with the medicine and oncology patient group including end of life care. You will be highly motivated, have the ability to adapt to changing priorities in a busy environment, and work well in a team or on your own.
There is also a requirement to contribute to the weekends and bank holiday shifts as part of our service wide rota.
The successful applicant will work alongside Occupational Therapists who cover the respiratory, renal, oncology and haematology wards.
Core Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
Involvement in assessment, progression and discharge planning, implementing rehabilitation programmes delegated by registered staff.
Taking responsible for your own caseload, working both individually and alongside other members of the team.
Gathering information about home circumstances, completing specific functional assessments, ordering equipment and providing rehabilitation and planning discharges.
Working with a variety of patient groups including those managing long-term conditions or receiving end of life care.
Helping patients manage the symptoms they are experiencing due to their condition.
Providing informal supervision to more junior staff and contributing to student placements and team teachings.
Non-clinical duties including photocopying and filing.
Excellent communication skills are a must in this role as you will be expected to communicate with patients, carers and members of the MDT.

The Occupational Therapy service is part of the Therapies, Outpatients and Phlebotomy Services (TOPS) Directorate, within the Specialist Clinical Services care group. We are a diverse directorate of AHPs, nursing and support staff, employing around 1000 staff, working together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the directorate leadership team have AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

The successful candidate will have previously worked within therapies in a care environment and be able to manage their own caseload. You will be expected to undertake assessments and use clinical decision making skills to interpret assessments and plan treatment/discharge planning accordingly. You will also need to demonstrate use of a wide range of equipment to promote independence. You will be expected to lead on access visits.
You will be expected to make referrals onto appropriate hospital and community services e.g. Physiotherapy, ICELS, community OT and maintain comprehensive and accurate records in line with Trust policy.
You must have excellent communication skills. You must be able to develop, maintain and promote effective professional working relationships with other disciplines and members of the team and use effective communication skills to gain co-operation with treatment where there may be significant barriers to understanding or ability to co-operate with the treatment.
You will be able to develop, maintain and promote effective professional working relationships with other disciplines and members of the team including nursing and medical staff and feel confident to do so.
You will be able to provide advice and support on a day-to-day basis to other support workers including delegating tasks for them to complete.
