Job summary

Wave Mobile Money seeks an Observability Engineer to help engineers understand, operate, debug, and improve systems powering payments for millions of users across Africa.

You will own and evolve Wave’s observability platform across our Python backend, GraphQL API, Postgres and CockroachDB, Kubernetes workloads, cloud and on‑prem environments, enabling teams to detect problems and make reliability and performance decisions.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in observability, SRE, or platform engineering.
• Deep understanding of metrics, logging, tracing, and incident response at scale.
• Experience building internal tooling or platforms for engineers.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Pragmatic judgment on tooling vs. simplicity; comfortable learning others' code.

Responsibilities

• Improve understanding of production behavior across code, APIs, databases, caches, Kubernetes, cloud, and on‑prem environments.
• Define SLIs, reduce alert fatigue, ensure actionable alerts tied to user impact.
• Build internal tooling and self‑service workflows for instrumentation and incident analysis.
• Identify reliability, latency, capacity, and cost issues before incidents reach users.
• Establish observability standards, docs, and training for Wave’s engineers.
• Operate and improve the observability platform (Datadog, Honeycomb, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) while managing costs.
