Job summary

The Met Office offers a 12-month Year in Industry placement in Software Engineering for Next Generation Regional Modelling, starting July 2027 in Exeter. The role supports development of regional LFRic modelling infrastructure and collaboration with Met Office scientists and software engineers.

Hybrid working may be available; attendance in the office is encouraged at least once a week. Salary is £27,170 with 27.5 days annual leave, plus discounts on shopping and leisure brands.

Qualifications

• Interest in applying software engineering to scientific or numerical problems.
• Experience programming in at least one language through coursework, personal projects or employment.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a technical team and respond constructively to feedback.
• Good written and verbal communication skills to explain technical ideas clearly.
• Ability to organise and manage your own work and make progress on a defined technical project.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the development and testing of regional LFRic modelling infrastructure.
• Work alongside Met Office scientists and software engineers to deliver a self-contained project within our regional modelling infrastructure.
