At National Gas, the work we do matters.

As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future.

Join us and help secure Britain's energy.

About the role

We're looking for a Network Control Engineer to join our Operational Delivery team, providing technical assurance and operational decision-making across the National Transmission System (NTS). You'll assess complex operational activities, manage operational risk, and help ensure the safe, secure and efficient operation of Great Britain's gas transmission network.

The decisions made by our Network Control Engineers directly impact the safety, resilience and reliability of the UK's gas transmission network. Working at the heart of national operations, you'll provide expert oversight of planned and unplanned activities, ensuring compliance with safety regulations whilst maintaining security of supply for our customers.

This is a flow-through role, offering a clear progression pathway through the grading structure. Progression is based on the successful demonstration of the safety, technical and professional competencies required at each grade, together with consistently performing to the standards expected of the next level.

What you'll be doing
  • Assess and provide assurance for Routine and Non-Routine Operations across the National Transmission System.
  • Evaluate operational risks associated with maintenance activities, outages and network interventions.
  • Provide expert technical advice to operational, engineering, asset and project teams.
  • Review, challenge and approve operational procedures to ensure compliance with safety and governance requirements.
  • Lead discussions on operational readiness, outage planning and risk mitigation activities.
  • Identify operational conflicts and coordinate solutions with key stakeholders across the business.
  • Support continuous improvement of operational processes, planning methodologies and risk management practices.
What you'll bring
  • Degree-level qualification in an engineering, technical or numerate discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong understanding of operational risk management within a safety-critical environment.
  • Experience assessing complex operational activities, procedures or maintenance interventions.
  • Ability to apply sound technical judgement and make decisions that balance safety, compliance and operational requirements.
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the ability to challenge constructively.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing competing priorities and timescales.
  • Experience within gas transmission, energy, utilities, process engineering or other safety-critical industries.
  • Knowledge of gas safety legislation and Safe Control of Operations (SCO) procedures.
  • Engineering Council accreditation (EngTech, IEng or equivalent).
  • Experience working within operational control, network planning or asset management functions.
  • Existing knowledge of National Transmission System operations.
Security clearance

This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit www.gov.uk (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).

  • Family-friendly policies, wellbeing support, and professional development opportunities
