Are you an experienced tradesperson with a passion for working with young people and helping them develop practical skills for life beyond school?

Timeplan Eduction are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Multi Trades Tutor to join a specialist SEN school in South Devon on a permanent, full-time basis.

The school supports young people aged 11-19 with a range of complex needs, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The school provides a supportive, structured and nurturing environment where practical and vocational learning plays an important role in preparing pupils for adulthood, further education, apprenticeships and employment.

The Role

As a Multi Trades Tutor, you will lead the planning and delivery of a range of practical, multi-trade subjects across the school. You will use your practical knowledge and experience to engage pupils in meaningful, hands-on learning and help them develop valuable vocational and life skills.

Subjects may include:

  • Plumbing
  • Carpentry
  • Plastering
  • Brickwork
  • General building and maintenance skills
  • Other practical and vocational activities

You will adapt your teaching and approach to meet the individual needs and abilities of each pupil, helping them to build confidence, develop independence and achieve positive outcomes.

About the Pupils

The pupils have a range of complex needs, including SEMH and ASD, and may present with behaviours that require a consistent, calm and individualised approach.

Every pupil has a carefully written and regularly reviewed Behaviour Support Plan, identifying the proactive and reactive strategies, early interventions and de-escalation techniques that are most effective for them.

You will therefore need to be patient, resilient and confident in building positive relationships with young people who may have experienced significant barriers to education.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Relevant practical experience and/or qualifications in a range of trades, such as plumbing, carpentry, plastering and brickwork
  • A formal professional qualification in youth work, community work, social care or education
  • Experience of working with young people and an understanding of their individual learning and support needs
  • Experience of supporting young people with SEMH, ASD or other complex needs, or a strong understanding of the challenges they may face
  • A proven ability to build positive, trusting and professional relationships with young people
  • The ability to manage challenging behaviour calmly and confidently, using appropriate de-escalation and positive behaviour support strategies
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • A record of relevant and continuous professional development (CPD)
  • Excellent communication, organisation and teamwork skills
  • The ability to plan and deliver engaging, practical learning activities that are accessible to pupils with a range of abilities
Desirable
  • Previous experience working within an SEN, specialist education or alternative provision setting
  • Experience of delivering vocational or practical skills to young people
  • Knowledge of behaviour support plans and individualised approaches to managing behaviour
  • Relevant trade qualifications or significant industry experience across multiple trades

A teaching qualification is not necessarily required for this role, provided you have strong relevant trade experience and the ability and enthusiasm to support young people in developing practical skills.

  • Salary of 26,440 - 34,885 per annum, dependent on qualifications and experience
