Are you a passionate and adaptable educator who wants to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people with additional needs?

We are seeking a General Tutor to join a specialist SEN school in South Devon on a permanent, full-time basis. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced teacher, tutor or education professional who can confidently support pupils across a range of subjects and adapt learning to meet individual needs.

The school caters for pupils aged 11–19 with complex needs, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The Role

As a General Tutor, you will support pupils across a broad range of subjects, helping them to develop their academic knowledge, confidence and independence.

You will be involved in planning and delivering engaging learning activities across:

  • Maths
  • Humanities
  • ICT
  • Science

You will work with pupils at different levels and abilities, adapting the curriculum and your teaching approach to ensure learning is accessible, meaningful and engaging.

The role is about much more than simply delivering lessons. You will build strong, positive relationships with pupils, encourage them to engage with education and help them develop the skills, confidence and attitudes needed to progress towards adulthood, further education, apprenticeships and employment.

Supporting Pupils with SEN

The pupils have a range of complex needs, including SEMH and ASD, and may have experienced significant barriers to accessing education.

Each pupil has an individual Behaviour Support Plan, which is carefully written and regularly reviewed to identify the proactive and reactive strategies, early interventions and de-escalation techniques that are most effective for them.

As a General Tutor, you will need to be patient, consistent and emotionally resilient, with the ability to remain calm and positive when pupils are experiencing difficulties.

You will work closely with colleagues to provide a consistent approach and create a safe, structured and supportive learning environment.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience of teaching, tutoring or supporting young people across a range of academic subjects
  • Is confident supporting English, Maths, Humanities, ICT and Science
  • Has a relevant teaching, education, youth work, community work, social care or similar professional qualification
  • Has experience working with young people with SEN, SEMH, ASD or other complex needs, or a strong understanding of their individual needs
  • Can adapt learning and teaching approaches to suit different abilities and learning styles
  • Is confident managing challenging behaviour using positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies
  • Can build strong, trusting relationships with young people
  • Is patient, resilient, enthusiastic and consistent
  • Has excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • Can demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development (CPD)
Why Join This School?

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Make a genuine difference to young people's lives and future prospects
  • Deliver a broad and varied curriculum
  • Support pupils to overcome barriers to learning
  • Develop pupils' confidence, independence and academic skills
  • Work within a supportive and specialist SEN environment
