Job summary

United Utilities in Southport, Merseyside, is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Field Service Engineer to join our maintenance team at Southport Wastewater Treatment Works. You’ll deliver planned and reactive mechanical maintenance across wastewater assets, diagnose faults, and return equipment to service while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

The role starts with a core mechanical focus, with on-the-job training to broaden your skills.

Qualifications

  • Time-served apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a mechanical discipline.
  • Relevant industry experience within mechanical maintenance, engineering, or industrial environments.
  • Strong fault-finding, planning and organisational skills.
  • Hands-on experience with pumps, gearboxes, valves and rotating machinery.
  • Willingness to develop additional skills and support a multi-skilled maintenance approach.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver planned and reactive mechanical maintenance across wastewater assets.
  • Diagnose faults, carry out repairs, and return equipment to service.
  • Maintain and improve asset reliability through proactive maintenance and root-cause analysis.
  • Ensure all work complies with Health & Safety legislation, environmental standards and policies.
  • Accurately record asset performance, defects and repair data in systems.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support projects.
  • Manage maintenance activities within agreed budgets where applicable.
  • Work independently when required, while remaining a team player.
  • Participate in on-call standby rota and work in confined spaces when needed.
