Job summary

The Port of London Authority seeks a Marine Engineering Technician (Multi‑Skilled) in Gravesend to perform mechanical and electrical maintenance across PLA vessels up to 36m and related shore facilities. The role covers fault finding, repairs, and refits, with supervision of contractors and potential relief as Ship’s Engineer.

Based on a 35‑hour week, the role requires flexibility for out‑of‑hours work and supporting emergency requirements, plus mentoring apprentices within a safety‑driven

Qualifications

• Advanced Apprenticeship leading to an HNC, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Mechanical/Electrical engineering.
• Solid practical and theoretical experience in mechanical and electrical maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair.
• Experience with diesel engines and vessel mechanical systems including propulsion, fuel and cooling.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive mechanical and electrical maintenance on PLA vessels and shore facilities.
• Diagnose and repair faults across marine engineering systems.
• Maintain diesel engines, propulsion, hydraulic, fuel and cooling systems.
• Undertake electrical installations and fault finding on vessel distribution and control systems.
• Support vessel refits, equipment upgrades and installation projects.
• Supervise contractors and technical staff when required.
• Provide relief as Ship’s Engineer on the PLA Salvage Craft.
• Mentor apprentices and trainee engineers; promote safety and best practice.
