Job summary

Supply Star Recruitment is recruiting on behalf of a provision in Coventry for a Mechanics Learning Mentor to support learners in practical mechanics sessions and develop their maintenance, engine, diagnostics, and safe-working skills.

You will work with the Mechanics Instructor to provide individual and small-group support, building engagement and confidence while prioritising SEMH needs and safe, inclusive learning environments.

Qualifications

• A Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Mechanics, Automotive Engineering or a related field.
• Industry experience in mechanics, vehicle maintenance or automotive technology.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• A patient, supportive and encouraging approach to working with young people.
• An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, supporting students with SEMH needs.
• Desirable: experience in education, training, youth work or mentoring roles.
• Desirable: familiarity with vocational qualifications such as BTEC or City & Guilds.
• Desirable: Health & Safety certification (COSHH, First Aid).

Responsibilities

• Support students during practical mechanics sessions, helping them to develop their skills and confidence in areas such as vehicle maintenance, engine systems, diagnostics, hydraulics and safe working practices.
• Work alongside the Mechanics Instructor to provide individual and small‑group support to learners.
• Build positive relationships with students, encouraging engagement, motivation and independence.
• Act as a positive role model, supporting students with their personal development as well as their vocational learning.
• Prepare workshop materials, tools and equipment for practical sessions.
• Ensure workshop equipment is maintained, organised and used safely in accordance with health and safety procedures.
• Monitor student engagement and progress, providing feedback to the teaching team.
• Support students with SEMH needs, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes.
• Work collaboratively with teachers and other professionals to create a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
