Job summary

AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technical Director to lead technical excellence within the national D&AT practice in the UK. You will drive high‑impact projects across water, nuclear and defence sectors with a focus on delivery, governance and innovation.

The successful candidate will be a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with extensive leadership experience, and a proven track record in delivering complex designs for water, nuclear or defence sectors within a UK context.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Chartered Mechanical Engineer.
• Experience in senior technical roles leading high‑risk projects.
• Knowledge of pumps, blowers, screens and dosing systems.
• Experience in the UK Water market.
• Strong communication and stakeholder influence.
• CDM Regulations and DSEAR knowledge.
• Commercial acumen for proposals and growth.
• Willingness to travel UK-wide.

Responsibilities

• Provide Technical Leadership within discipline for the national D&AT practice and influence Practice wide initiatives.
• Serve as a recognised expert and technical authority in Mechanical Engineering across the D&AT Practice and AtkinsRéalis.
• Provide visible representation of Mechanical Engineering expertise to clients.
• Collaborate with stakeholders at all levels, including internal and external clients.
• Recommend and drive improvements to processes, services, and technical practices with robust governance.
• Oversee technical input into bid proposals and define delivery strategy.
• Identify cross-selling opportunities and strengthen client relationships.
• Grow and manage the Mechanical engineering capability within the national practice.
• Anticipate regulatory and technology challenges and advise senior leadership.
• Provide strategic oversight across multiple complex, multidisciplinary projects.
