Job summary

Leonardo is seeking a Mechanical Summer Placement student to gain hands-on experience on real-world projects in the Defence domain. You will join a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to design and develop metallic and composite structures, mechanical components, transmissions, and embedded systems.

The role runs from June to August 2027 with on-site work at our Basildon site, and a hybrid working pattern.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing at least a Bachelor level degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
• Self-motivated and eager to tackle challenges while developing personally.
• Strong communication across written, verbal and digital media.

Responsibilities

• Acquire the skills to operate within a Professional Engineering environment.
• Support Mechanical Engineering Team in delivering technical solutions meeting customer needs.
• Create and present design data following department Best Practices and industry tools.
• Deliver detailed designs, including numerical calculations and tolerance studies.
• Produce Manufacturing Data Packs aligned with BS8888 and GD&T usage.
• Generate part drawings, assemblies and mechanisms within the constraints defined by the Mechanical Lead.
• Work to meet cost, schedule and quality demands.
