Job summary

HS2 Ltd. in Birmingham is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to coordinate the design, installation and delivery of mechanical systems for the Midlands section of the HS2 project.

You will work closely with the Engineering Manager to ensure the safe and efficient execution of works across major infrastructure assets. The role requires a degree in Mechanical Engineering, with experience in construction or large-scale infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience delivering mechanical engineering solutions within construction/infrastructure.
  • Coordinate and manage multidisciplinary engineering activities through design and delivery phases.
  • Strong knowledge of technical standards, compliance requirements and industry best practice.
  • Experience reviewing and challenging engineering designs to ensure safe, practical solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the design, installation and delivery of mechanical engineering works across assigned project areas.
  • Assist and support the Engineering Manager to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of mechanical systems.
  • Conduct technical reviews of designs, specifications and subcontractor proposals, providing feedback and recommendations.
  • Ensure safety, quality and compliance requirements are embedded throughout all stages of design and delivery.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, suppliers and subcontractors to ensure integration of mechanical systems.
  • Manage and monitor technical approvals, documentation and assurance processes to meet project requirements.
  • Support engineering reviews, risk assessments and technical workshops, implementing actions to drive successful project outcomes.

Current Opportunity: Mechanical Engineer

HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Location

Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience delivering mechanical engineering solutions within construction, infrastructure or major projects environments.
  • Proven ability to coordinate and manage multidisciplinary engineering activities through design and delivery phases.
  • Strong knowledge of technical standards, compliance requirements and industry best practice.
  • Experience reviewing and challenging engineering designs to ensure safe, practical and efficient solutions.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across project teams, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Experience within rail, transportation or other large-scale infrastructure projects would be advantageous.
