Job description

We are currently recruiting Mechanical & Electrical Technicians to join us to cover the West of Thames Water Region, the Operational base will be Maple Lodge, however, the successful candidate can be located either in Oxford, Reading, or the Swindon area.

As the successful candidate, you will be working in multi-discipline teams and will be responsible for carrying out scheduled, unscheduled and emergency maintenance work on mechanical and electrical equipment in compliance with company procedures to minimise plant breakdown.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference to Thames Water's environmental impact, and you will be actively helping to reduce pollution from our sites.

What you’ll be doing as the Mechanical & Electrical Technician

  • Investigate plant failures and perform repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible to avoid interruptions to the process. This may involve investigating and diagnosing complex faults and performing repairs during incidents.
  • You will be expected to provide technical advice, refer to up-to-date technical knowledge, and provide training or support for technical trainees if required.
  • Examples of equipment that you will be working on include motors, gearboxes, screw /chain conveyors & centrifuges, various pumps, and associated control gear, 3-phase motors, starters and controls, electronic control systems such as VSD, automatic valves, flow, level and pressure measurement, programmable logic controllers, variable speed drives and controls, chemical handling, and dosing equipment.
  • Completing statutory checks as required.
  • Always working safely and complying with all Health and Safety guidance and procedures.

Base Location: Maple Lodge - Rickmansworth - WD3 9SQ.

Working Pattern 36 Hours Monday- Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm plus standby and overtime opportunities increasing earnings by a potential £8,000 - £10,000 per annum upon completion of essential company training.

All PPE, tools, van and fuel card are provided.

What you should bring to the role
  • You should be a time-served apprentice with significant experience in electrical systems working in a “true multi-skilled” capacity.
  • Previous experience in an electrical apprenticeship, ONC/HNC in engineering, NVQ or C&G level 3 in mechanical engineering is crucial.
  • Experience in maintaining, testing, installing and fault diagnosis on electrical plant equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety issues are crucial.
  • The work requires you to work in confined spaces with the successful completion of appropriate training.
  • A valid driving license is essential, and all necessary equipment, such as vehicles and tools are provided.

  • Be a self-motivated individual who can immerse themselves into the team around them, you need to be very disciplined, have the desire to learn from those around you and have a can-do attitude. This role can be demanding at times, but is also very rewarding.
  • Take Ownership of responding quickly to faults, being curious to fully understand the problem, and identifying the best solution to resolve it the first time.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to interact with the team.
  • Teamwork – We are one team, and our end goals are the same.
  • Proactive – take the lead on recommendations and improvements around the site and communicate effectively.
  • Be prepared to be trained in safety procedures.
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety standards.

What’s in it for you?
  • Competitive base salary up to £39,000 per annum depending on skills and experience.
  • Standby rota payments & Overtime opportunities can increase this earning potential by up to a further £8,000 - £10,000 per annum upon completion of essential company training.
