What is the job?
We are currently seeking a critical thinking, efficient, and reliable individual to join our Engineering Team. Your role will involve designing products and managing their development cycle to ensure timely production with all necessary information for manufacturability.

Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (Hybrid Working Available)

Thorlabs is a global leader in optical technologies, specializing in innovative photonics products used in manufacturing and research, from fibre optics to piezo motors. We have 22 facilities worldwide, including here in Ely, where we handle the Motion Control and Optical Tables product line.

Where you will be working?

This role is hybrid, based at our new facility in Witchford, Ely, with the flexibility to work from home. Ely is located just 12 miles from Cambridge, with good train and bus links from London.

Requirements

Essential qualifications and experience include:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience (5 years preferred)
• Proven experience in product development with released products
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams to complete projects
• Understanding of machinery directive safety legislation and compliance
• Experience with 3D and 2D modelling software, demonstrating creativity and attention to detail
• Ability to produce high-quality manufacturing drawings with full tolerances and finishing specifications
• Experience designing precision components with micron-level tolerances
• Strong knowledge of material selection for mechanical assemblies
• Ability to multitask, manage time effectively, and work independently
• Problem-solving skills for quick resolution of issues

Preferred skills and responsibilities include:

• Designing mechanical mechanisms for motion control and vibration isolation
• Developing, testing, and evaluating designs using a concurrence engineering approach
• Producing detailed specifications from test data
• Collaborating with team members, subcontractors, and suppliers to address technical challenges
• Implementing Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) and compliance considerations
• Ensuring product reliability and consistent performance under operating conditions
• Planning and overseeing product development timelines
• Managing cost, safety, compliance, and time constraints effectively
