Job summary

Colchester United is seeking friendly, safety-minded stewards to assist the management team in coordinating supporters and visitors, ensuring a safe environment before, during and after events. You will attend briefings, locate emergency equipment, monitor crowds and report incidents to the control room.

Role requires vigilance, clear communication and the ability to manage crowds and evacuations when required at the stadium.

Qualifications

  • Ideally experience within customer service would be an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Attend pre and post match briefing to sign in and determine duties.
  • Know the location of firefighting equipment at the ground.
  • Know the location of the first aid room and other first aid equipment.
  • Be conversant with methods or signals used to alert staff of emergencies.
  • Recognise potential fire hazards and report to Control room.
  • Comply with instructions given in an emergency by Safety Officers or police.
  • Identify and investigate incidents among spectators and report findings.
  • Monitor crowd for distress or overcrowding and act per standing instructions.
  • Prevent overcrowding by ensuring crowd limits are respected.
  • Advise spectators not to climb fences or stand on seats and report to Chief Steward.
  • Staff parking areas to keep exits clear and vehicles correctly parked.
  • Ensure gangways and exits are kept clear and staff all exits.
  • Assist in diverting spectators and closing turnstiles when area nears capacity.
  • Remain at allocated post unless ordered otherwise by Supervisor or Safety Officer.
  • Report damage or defects posing safety threats (e.g., damaged seat/barrier).
  • Assist in prevention of pitch invasion and in evacuation of the ground.
  • Assist in identifying spectators who are banned or without tickets or with forged tickets.
  • Assist in preventing breaches of ground regulations.
  • All duties may be assigned as needed; ideally experience in customer service.

Job description

To Assist the management team with the co-ordination of supporters and visitors and operate in a safe environment before, during and after the event.,

  • Attend pre and post match briefing to sign in and determine duties.
  • Know the location of and be able to effectively operate the firefighting equipment at the ground.
  • Know the location of the first aid room and any first aid equipment kept elsewhere at the Stadium.
  • Be fully conversant with any methods or signals used to alert staff that an emergency has arisen.
  • Be capable of recognising potential fire hazards and suspect packages, reporting such findings immediately to the control room and follow any instructions given.
  • Comply promptly with any instruction given in an emergency by the Safety Officer, Deputy Safety Officer, Supervisor or a Police Officer.
  • Identify and investigate an incident or occurrence among spectators, reporting their findings to the Control room.
  • Monitor the crowd throughout the ground for signs of distress or overcrowding and act in accordance with standing instructions.
  • Prevent overcrowding by ensuring the crowd limits in various parts of the ground are complied with.
  • Advise spectators, as far as possible, from climbing fences and other structures and from standing on seats (whereby virtue of the scale of the incident Stewards are unable to prevent this, they should immediately report the matter to the Chief Steward or the Safety Officer).
  • Staff all parking areas to ensure all approaches and emergency exits are kept clear and that vehicles are correctly parked.
  • Ensure that gangways and exits are kept clear.
  • Staff all exits.
  • Assist in the diversion of spectators to other parts of the ground including the closing of turnstiles when the capacity for any area is about to be reached.
  • Remain at allocated post as instructed unless authorised or ordered to do otherwise by the Supervisor, the Safety Officer or a Police Officer.
  • Report to the Supervisor or Safety Officer any damage or defect which is likely to pose a threat to spectator safety e.g. a damaged seat or barrier.
  • Assist in the prevention of pitch invasion.
  • Assist as required in the evacuation of the ground.
  • Assist in the identification of spectators who are banned from the ground or who do not possess tickets at all ticket matches or who are in possession of forged tickets.
  • Assist in the prevention of breaches of ground regulations.
