Job summary

Reed in Rochdale is seeking an experienced Manual Lathe Turner to join a busy machine shop. You will set up and operate manual lathes to produce precise components to customer drawings, ensuring quality and safety in a fast-paced environment.

You will read engineering drawings, measure parts with micrometers and gauges, and select appropriate tooling. The role requires accuracy, teamwork, and commitment to standards, with a rotating weekly shift pattern.

Qualifications

• Experience operating manual lathes in a manufacturing/engineering setting.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
• Experience working to tight tolerances.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate manual lathes to manufacture components from drawings.
• Produce parts to tight tolerances and inspect with measuring equipment.
• Interpret drawings and select tooling, speeds and feeds.
• Carry out basic machine maintenance and housekeeping.
• Identify and report quality or production issues and adhere to health & safety procedures.
• Collaborate with colleagues to meet production targets.

Manual Lathe Turner

Location: Rochdale
Salary: £18.00 per hour
Shifts: Rotating Weekly Shifts

• Week 1: 6:00am - 2:00pm
• Week 2: 2:00pm - 10:00pm

The Role

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Manual Lathe Turner to join a well-established manufacturing business. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled machinist with experience operating manual lathes to produce high-quality precision components to customer specifications.

Working within a busy machine shop environment, you will be responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining manual turning machinery while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Set and operate manual lathes to manufacture components from engineering drawings.
• Produce precision-machined parts to tight tolerances.
• Measure and inspect finished components using a range of measuring equipment.
• Interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Select appropriate tooling, speeds, and feeds for machining operations.
• Carry out basic machine maintenance and housekeeping duties.
• Identify and report any quality or production issues.
• Work in line with health and safety procedures at all times.
• Collaborate with colleagues to ensure production targets are achieved.

Requirements

• Previous experience operating manual lathes within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
• Experience working to tight tolerances.
• Competent in the use of measuring equipment such as micrometers, verniers, and gauges.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Time-served apprenticeship or relevant engineering qualification would be advantageous.
