Job summary

Long Term Futures are recruiting a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist SEMH school in Derby from September 2026. The role involves 1:1 and small group support for pupils aged 4–16 with SEMH needs, focusing on independence, communication, confidence and positive relationships in and out of the classroom.

The successful candidate will hold Level 3 qualification minimum, have experience with SEN, and be committed to safeguarding.

Qualifications

  • Clear commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Encourage independence, communication skills and positive relationships.
  • Support pupils to access learning through personalised strategies meeting individual needs.
  • Build constructive relationships that promote positive behaviour and engagement in learning.
  • Help pupils develop confidence, resilience, and essential life skills.
  • Monitor pupil progress and provide feedback to teaching staff to adapt support strategies.

Hours: Monday to Friday | 8.40am – 15.40pm
Duration: Long-Term to Permanent
Start Date: 3 rd September 2026

The Opportunity:

Long Term Futures are looking to appoint a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist SEMH school in Derby from September 2026. The school supports pupils aged 4–16 with SEMH needs and EHCPs, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment focused on overcoming barriers to learning, building confidence, and developing independence. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about specialist education to make a genuine difference to young people’s lives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Encourage pupils to develop independence, communication skills, confidence, and positive relationships both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Support pupils to access learning through personalised strategies that meet their personal needs.
  • As a Learning Support Assistant, you will need to build constructive, trusting relationships that promote positive behaviour, and engagement in learning.
  • Assist pupils in developing confidence, resilience, independence, and essential life skills both inside and outside the classroom
  • Monitor pupil progress and provide regular feedback to teaching staff to help adapt support strategies and intervention plans
Who We’re Looking For:
  • Level 3 qualification minimum and essential
  • Experience working with SEN students, in either a primary or secondary setting
  • A patient, flexible, and nurturing approach to supporting young people
  • Strong communication skills to work collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff, and students
  • As a learning support assistant, you must have a clear commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing
  • Someone who can commit to full time hours, Monday to Friday, 8.40am – 15.40pm with the opportunity to progress into a permanent role.
