We are seeking an inspiring Learning Mentor to join our dedicated team at a Secondary SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) School in Salford, ready for the new academic year in September.

About the Role:

As a Learning Mentor, you will play a pivotal role in supporting students with SEMH needs, helping them to engage with their education, develop essential life skills, and build self-esteem. You will work closely with students on a one-to-one or small group basis, providing guidance, encouragement, and a consistent positive presence to help them thrive both academically and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide targeted pastoral and academic support to students with SEMH needs, addressing barriers to learning and promoting positive engagement.

  • Build strong, trusting, and empathetic relationships with students, acting as a positive role model and advocate.

  • Guide students in developing effective coping strategies, improving their emotional regulation, and fostering positive social interactions.

  • Support students in managing their behaviour, utilizing restorative practices and de-escalation techniques as needed.

  • Work collaboratively with class teachers, SENCOs, pastoral leaders, and external professionals to ensure a holistic approach to student well-being and progress.

  • Facilitate small group interventions and activities designed to enhance self-esteem, resilience, and communication skills.

  • Monitor student attendance, punctuality, and overall engagement, reporting concerns and progress to relevant staff.

  • Maintain accurate records of mentoring sessions and student interactions.

  • Contribute positively to the school's inclusive ethos and a nurturing environment.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience working with young people, particularly those with social, emotional, and mental health needs, or challenging behaviour.

  • A strong understanding of the issues and challenges faced by secondary school-aged students with SEMH.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust quickly.

  • Patience, empathy, resilience, and a consistent, non-judgmental approach.

  • The ability to manage challenging situations calmly and effectively.

  • A proactive, flexible, and adaptable attitude, able to respond to diverse student needs.

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualifications in Youth Work, Counselling, Health and Social Care, Education, or a related field.

  • Experience working within a school environment, particularly a secondary or specialist setting.

  • Training in mentoring, restorative justice, or specific therapeutic approaches.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

  • A profoundly rewarding role with the opportunity to make a tangible and lasting difference in young people's lives.

  • A supportive, collaborative, and specialist team environment.

  • Opportunities for ongoing professional development and training specific to SEMH.

  • A chance to contribute to a school community dedicated to student success and well-being.

To Apply:

If you are a passionate Learning Mentor ready to empower young people and contribute to a nurturing secondary SEMH school environment from September, we encourage you to apply.
