Job summary

Arup is seeking a technically strong leader to drive protection and control engineering for transmission substations in the UK. You will design, implement and oversee protection schemes, acting as the principal interface with multidisciplinary teams to ensure reliable and resilient power networks.

You will mentor engineers, contribute to standards, and support client engagements, tendering and project delivery across major grid modernization initiatives.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer status essential.
• Extensive experience in HV/EHV protection & control systems.
• Proven track record leading engineering teams on large projects.
• Expertise in protection relays, SCADA and comms protocols IEC 61850/DNP3.
• Familiarity with ETAP/DIgSILENT and power-system analysis tools.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for protection & control across multiple projects.
• Oversee design, configuration and implementation of protection schemes.
• Ensure compliance with IEC, IEEE and national grid standards.
• Mentor junior engineers and lead technical reviews.
• Engage clients, regulators and contractors as main technical interface.
• Support tendering with authoritative technical input and cost optimization.
