Job summary

Scrumconnect Consulting in Swansea, UK, is seeking a Lead Software Developer to design, build, and maintain high-quality software for UK government clients, delivering value for citizens and the public sector. You will work in a multidisciplinary agile team to meet GDS standards and accessibility requirements.

This hands-on technical role operates in structured, governed environments where security, performance, accessibility and reliability are critical.

Qualifications

• Strong experience designing, building, and operating production software systems.
• Confident with modern development standards, including test-driven development, CI/CD, and code review.
• Understanding of information security principles and secure-by-default engineering.
• Experience with systems design and integration in complex environments.
• Comfortable supporting services in production, including on-call participation, incident response, and observability.
• User-focused mindset and collaboration with designers and product colleagues.
• Experience working in agile or hybrid delivery models, such as Scrum and Kanban.
• Experience working on high-volume transactional digital services, or evidence you can ramp up quickly.
• Domain knowledge of UK tax administration.
• Experience in regulated public-sector or financial-services environments.
• Open-source contributions to government engineering ecosystems.
• Active community-of-practice contributions such as talks, blog posts, or internal teaching.

Responsibilities

• Lead development across one or a small number of related teams.
• Guide how teams work, including engineering practices, ways of working, and quality standards.
• Be proficient across a wide range of technical systems and identify the right tooling and approaches.
• Make architectural and build-vs-buy decisions in collaboration with the Technical Architect.
• Provide technical leadership, coaching, and mentoring across the engagement.
• Contribute to the Scrumconnect developer community and promote the adoption of good practices.
• Act as a senior on-call responder and drive long-term resilience improvements.
