Job description

Job summary

Due to a review into the staffing establishment, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an additional Band 5 Lead Nursery Nurse on the East London Mother & Baby Unit.

The East London MBU is a 12-bedded unit based in the City & Hackney Centre for Mental Health.

We provide care and treatment for women with pre-existing mental illnesses who suffer a relapse during pregnancy or after childbirth, such as bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, recurrent depressive disorder, severe anxiety disorder, and schizo-affective disorder.

Women who develop an acute mental illness such as puerperal psychosis or depression during or after pregnancy.

Women at significant risk of becoming unwell in the perinatal period (prophylactic admissions) with established diagnoses of mental illness already known to mental health services—referrals considered from 32 weeks gestation.

The aim of the unit is to ensure that all women with young infants requiring admission can remain with their baby, preserving the vital mother-baby bond during a critical time in their lives.

Main duties of the job

As the lead nursery nurse, you will work within an established multidisciplinary team, leading a team of nursery nurses to ensure all aspects of baby development and care are central to the treatment plan for mothers experiencing a mental health episode.

You will also play a pivotal role in supporting fathers, caregivers, and carers in all aspects of baby development and care.

You will participate in and ensure nursery nurse-led groups are conducted on the Mother & Baby Unit, developing these programs with feedback from mothers.

You will oversee inductions for new nursery nurses and provide specialist training to the wider nursing and multidisciplinary team around baby care.

You will be instrumental in maintaining high standards and quality of care to support the Royal College of Psychiatrists accreditation.

With the transition to a Provider Collaborative Model for MBUs, there are potential future developments and changes in which you will play a key role.

This role involves working long shifts within the established roster, including working 2 weekends out of every 4-week period.

You will also be expected to undertake training in physical holding skills and be part of the wider unit rapid response team.
