Job summary

GE Vernova Grid Solutions in Europe seeks a Primary Design Team Leader HVDC to own end-to-end primary design of HVDC and HV/EHV substation projects, coordinating with civil, protection and control, and systems teams to deliver integrated designs.

You will mentor a team of primary design engineers, ensure compliance with European standards, lead reviews, and drive on-time delivery from tender through execution on offshore interconnectors and onshore upgrades.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical/Power/Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
• 10+ years' experience in HVDC and/or HV substation design with team leadership.
• Strong knowledge of European TSO transmission standards and practices.
• Proficiency with CAD and familiarity with BIM/3D tools (Revit, Navisworks).
• Experience with HVDC converter topologies (LCC and/or VSC/MMC) and insulation coordination.

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver primary designs for HVDC converter stations and HV/EHV substations (AIS, GIS) for major European transmission projects.
• Develop and review a fully integrated 3D model, general arrangement drawings, section drawings, and layout designs.
• Review and approve vendor drawings and specifications, ensuring alignment with project requirements.
• Ensure high-quality and timely delivery of engineering outputs.
• Perform and oversee primary design calculations (busbar sizing, short circuit, SAG-tension, grounding).
• Lead, manage, and coordinate a team of HVDC primary design engineers and drive project objectives.
• Mentor and coach team members to grow HVDC expertise.
• Liaise with clients, suppliers, and cross-functional teams to resolve technical queries.
• Manage design budgets and ensure on-time delivery to procurement, manufacturing, and site teams.
• Oversee subcontracted design work and flag scope or design changes; support cost optimisation.
• Present at design reviews and contribute to lessons-learned for improvement.
