Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking a Development Infrastructure design engineer to help deliver highway and drainage projects across public and private sectors. You will work in a team environment, producing designs, reports and calculations for planning applications and construction drawings.

The role offers hybrid working in the UK, with opportunities for mentoring and professional growth, Chartership support, and a focus on technical excellence.

Qualifications

  • Civil engineering degree and pursuit of Chartered status with highway experience.
  • Post-graduate experience in a civil engineering working environment.
  • Experience producing masterplans, site appraisals, drafting reports to support planning applications, design calculations and construction drawings.
  • Knowledge and ability to deliver highway design, highway drainage principles (layout, parameters, etc.), surface water and foul drainage designs.
  • Experience with Windes drainage software and PDS or Civils 3D modelling software, and applying Highways England and Local Authority design guidance.
  • Effective teamwork with senior and junior staff in producing designs, drawings and reports.
  • Knowledge of relevant design codes such as DMRB, Local Authority Highway and Water Authority Design Guides, and preparation of drawings for S38 and S278 Highway Agreements as well as S106 Drainage Agreements.
  • A consultancy or development background with a balance of private and public sector work.
  • Proven experience and interest in helping junior members of the team in producing designs.

Responsibilities

  • Produce designs and drawings for construction projects and deliver technical reports for masterplanning and to support planning applications. You will report to an Associate Director.
  • Work as a design engineer in teams to produce designs and drawings to support planning applications and construction.
  • Liaise with clients at a local and national level across a number of projects and client accounts.
  • Mentor and manage early career professionals, ensuring technical excellence in everything we deliver.
  • Provide day‑to‑day project management support in the delivery of concept studies and strategies with hands‑on design, leading to planning applications or construction drawing issues.
