Job summary

Randox Laboratories Ltd. in Antrim is seeking a Laboratory Shift Manager to oversee a 4 on 4 off shift (10am-10pm) at our Antrim laboratory. You will manage shift staff, maintain testing accuracy, and ensure timely results while upholding rigorous quality standards.

The role requires a Life Science degree or equivalent lab experience, leadership ability, and strong communication skills. This is a full-time, permanent position based in Antrim.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage shift staff, setting expectations and handling escalations.

• Ensure samples, data, and test results meet ISO 17025 / 15189 standards and internal SOPs.
• Monitor KPI performance: turnaround times, error rates, QC, downtime, backlog.
• Oversee stock levels and ensure continuity of testing operations.

Laboratory Shift Manager – Antrim (Job Ref: 26N/SMSP)

Contract Offered: Full-time, permanent

Working Hours / Shifts: 4 on 4 off, 10am-10pm

For this position, as you may be in contact with live blood samples, you must be vaccinated against Hepatitis B or be able to get it following a successful interview stage.

What does this role involve?

The Shift Manager is responsible for managing the people, resources and performance of their assigned shift within the regional Randox Clinical Laboratory Services (RCLS) laboratory, ensuring that testing is completed accurately, safely and to the required turnaround time. The post-holder holds overall accountability for shift level KPIs — productivity, error rates, QC performance, instrument downtime and backlog — taking direct action to resolve issues in real time and is reports to the Regional Laboratory Manager for the shift's overall results.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage Shift Leads, setting clear expectations and holding them accountable for their areas, resolving escalations they raise and supporting other shift staff — Clinical Lab Analysts, Clinical Lab Scientists and Lab Assistants — through them.
• Coordinate the shift's response to any incident, directing staff and liaising with other departments
• Coordinate with Clinics during the shift on sample collection, courier and specimen queries
• Coordinate with Customer Support during the shift on client queries
• Investigate root causes of testing errors, non-conformances and elevated repeat/re-test rates, taking direct corrective action to reduce recurrence.
• Analyse shift performance data — turnaround times, productivity, error rates, downtime and backlog
• Ensure sample integrity, chain of custody and correct handling procedures are maintained throughout the shift.
• Monitor stock and consumable levels during the shift, flagging shortages to the Regional Laboratory Manager in good time to avoid disruption to testing.
• Ensure all testing carried out during the shift complies with RCLS standard operating procedures and applicable standards, including ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189, GCP and MHRA Good Clinical Practice.
• Record and report shift handover information

Essential criteria:

• Qualified to degree level in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Immunology or a related Life Science, or equivalent relevant laboratory experience.
• Proven experience working in a clinical diagnostic or clinical trials laboratory environment.
• Experience supervising or leading others, whether in a formal management role or as a senior/lead analyst.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and organisational skills.

Desirable:

• Previous experience in a Shift Manager, Team Lead or supervisory role within a laboratory setting.
• Working knowledge of quality management systems (e.g. ISO 17025, ISO 15189).
• Experience using LIMS or Q-Pulse reporting to monitor QC, repeat-rate and turnaround-time performance.
