Job summary

Randox Laboratories in Warrington is seeking a shift supervisor for the regional laboratory. You will manage the people, resources and performance of the assigned shift, ensuring testing is completed accurately, safely and within required turnaround times.

You will report to the Regional Laboratory Manager and drive KPI results. The role demands ownership of shift KPIs, incident leadership, and coordination with Clinics and Customer Support to resolve sample and result issues.

Qualifications

• Degree-level qualification in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related life science.
• Experience in clinical diagnostic or clinical trials lab environment.
• Experience supervising or leading others.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Proficient with Word, Outlook, Excel and LIMS.

Responsibilities

• Manage shift people, resources and overall performance, ensuring productivity and safety.
• Own shift KPIs — productivity, error rates, QC pass rate, repeat/re-test rate, downtime and sample backlog.
• Act as incident lead for the shift and coordinate resolution with other departments.
• Ensure staff coverage, equipment allocation and SOP adherence across the shift.
• Coordinate with Clinics and Customer Support on samples, courier queries and result reporting.
• Investigate root causes of testing errors and reduce recurrence.
• Ensure sample integrity and chain of custody throughout the shift.
• Monitor stock and flag shortages to prevent disruption to testing.

Working Hours / Shifts: 4 on 4 off, 10am-10pm

What does this role involve?

Responsible for managing the people, resources and performance of their assigned shift within the regional Randox Clinical Laboratory Services (RCLS) laboratory, ensuring that testing is completed accurately, safely and to the required turnaround time. The post-holder holds overall accountability for shift level KPIs — productivity, error rates, QC performance, instrument downtime and backlog — taking direct action to resolve issues in real time and is reports to the Regional Laboratory Manager for the shift's overall results.

PERFORMANCE OWNERSHIP & ACCOUNTABILITY

• Manage the people, resources and overall performance of the assigned shift, holding accountability for productivity, quality, turnaround time and safety, and reporting directly to the Regional Laboratory Manager on results achieved.
• Own shift-level KPIs — productivity, error rates, QC pass rate, repeat/re-test rate, instrument downtime and sample backlog — driving corrective action in real time whenever performance falls short of target.
• Act as incident lead for the shift, owning the initial response to any incident raised and coordinating other departments through to resolution, keeping the Regional Laboratory Manager informed throughout.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage the day-to-day running of the shift, ensuring adequate staff cover, effective allocation of equipment and consumables, and adherence to standard operating procedures throughout.
• Coordinate with Clinics during the shift on sample collection, courier and specimen queries, ensuring issues affecting sample receipt or turnaround are resolved promptly.
• Coordinate with Customer Support during the shift on client queries, urgent requests and result-reporting issues, ensuring the shift's response supports client service commitments.
• Investigate root causes of testing errors, non-conformances and elevated repeat/re-test rates, taking direct corrective action to reduce recurrence.
• Ensure sample integrity, chain of custody and correct handling procedures are maintained throughout the shift.
• Monitor stock and consumable levels during the shift, flagging shortages to the Regional Laboratory Manager in good time to avoid disruption to testing.
• Ensure all testing carried out during the shift complies with RCLS standard operating procedures and applicable standards, including ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189, GCP and MHRA Good Clinical Practice.

Essential criteria

• Qualified to degree level in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry or a related Life Science, or equivalent relevant laboratory experience.
• Proven experience working in a clinical diagnostic or clinical trials laboratory environment.
• Experience supervising or leading others, whether in a formal management role or as a senior/lead analyst.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency with standard software packages (Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel) and laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
