Base pay range

Laboratory Research Assistant – Molecular Microbiology (6-month FTC)

Location: Central London (on-site)

Salary: Up to £35,000 per annum

Reports to: Chief Scientific Officer

InterSTEM is searching for a motivated Laboratory Research Assistant to support a cutting-edge antibacterial-vaccine programme within an innovative spin-out. This is an excellent opportunity to apply and broaden your molecular-microbiology skills in a collaborative, fast-moving environment.

What you’ll be doing:

• Molecular biology: DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning and small-scale protein purification.
• Microbiology: Routine culture work and sterile-technique experiments to generate and characterise bacterial strains.
• Sample preparation: Support sequencing, microscopy and proteomic workflows.
• Data & documentation: Record, analyse and present results using standard software; contribute to lab meetings and troubleshooting.
• Lab operations: Maintain reagent stocks, uphold safety / biosafety compliance and assist with general laboratory upkeep.

What you’ll bring:

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related discipline.
• Hands-on experience with core molecular or microbiological techniques.
• Strong organisational skills and meticulous record-keeping.
• Clear written and verbal communication.
• Experience with bacterial genetic manipulation (e.g. transformation, CRISPR, transposon mutagenesis).
• Working knowledge of laboratory safety and sterile protocols.
