Job description

Are you interested in starting a career in IT and technology? Do you enjoy solving problems, helping people and learning how things work?

We are looking for an enthusiastic IT Support Technician Apprentice to join our IT team and develop their technical skills while gaining valuable hands-on experience in a busy hospital environment.

As an apprentice, you will have the opportunity to learn on the job while working towards an IT qualification, supported by experienced members of our IT team. You’ll gain practical experience across a wide range of IT systems and technologies, while developing the skills and knowledge needed to build a successful career in IT support.

You’ll be involved in providing first-line technical support to colleagues across the hospital, helping to resolve issues with computers, laptops, printers, networks, Microsoft applications and other hospital IT systems.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is keen to learn, enjoys helping others and wants to develop a career in IT.

What will you be doing?

  • Act as a first point of contact for IT queries and technical issues from hospital staff.
  • Log, investigate and resolve IT support requests, escalating issues when appropriate.
  • Provide support for PCs, laptops, printers, peripherals and other IT equipment.
  • Develop your knowledge of Windows 11 and Microsoft Office.
  • Learn how user accounts, email accounts and security permissions are managed.
  • Gain experience using Active Directory and other IT systems and tools.
  • Develop an understanding of networks, servers, antivirus, backups and network management.
  • Support colleagues with hospital-specific applications and systems.
  • Assist with the implementation, training and ongoing support of IT applications.
  • Work alongside experienced IT professionals and develop your technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Assist with general IT administration and other duties as required.
  • Attend mandatory training and take an active role in your apprenticeship learning and development.

About the apprenticeship

This apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity to earn while you learn, gaining practical experience within a professional IT environment alongside your formal apprenticeship training.

You’ll receive support from both your apprenticeship training provider and our experienced IT team, giving you the opportunity to put your learning into practice every day.

You don't need to know everything about IT when you start. We’re looking for someone with the right attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. You’ll be encouraged to ask questions, develop your confidence and build your technical knowledge throughout the apprenticeship.

About you

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a genuine interest in IT and technology and wants to develop a career in IT support.
  • Is enthusiastic, motivated and keen to learn new skills.
  • Enjoys helping people and providing good customer service.
  • Has good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Is confident speaking to people and able to deal with queries in a polite and professional way.
  • Is a logical thinker who enjoys solving problems.
  • Can organise and prioritise their workload.
  • Is able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Has good attention to detail and takes pride in their work.
  • Is flexible and adaptable and able to remain calm when working under pressure.
  • Is comfortable using computers and has an interest in learning more about Microsoft Windows and Office.

It would be great if you already have:

  • Some experience or knowledge of IT systems, either through education, previous work experience or personal interest.
  • An understanding of Windows and Microsoft Office.
  • An interest in computer hardware, networks or how IT systems work.

Most importantly, we’re looking for potential. You don’t need to be an IT expert — we want someone who is curious, reliable and excited about developing their skills.

What we’re looking for in our people

You will be someone who:

  • Shares and demonstrates the KIMS values.
  • Works well as part of a team and is comfortable working with colleagues at all levels.
  • Is approachable, friendly and professional.
  • Is willing to learn from others and take responsibility for their own development.
  • Has a positive attitude and a “can-do” approach.
  • Pays attention to detail and takes pride in delivering a good service.

This is a great opportunity to start your IT career within a supportive and professional environment, gaining real-world experience while working towards a recognised qualification.

You’ll be working alongside an experienced IT team and will have the opportunity to develop a broad range of technical and customer service skills that can support your future career in IT.

Before your interview, take the time to research your potential new employer, finding out about their company values and what you might expect working there. And don’t forget to bring the appropriate ID with you.

Making a good first impression will get your interview off to a great start. It shows you are taking your application seriously and that you are diligent and conscientious. Dress smartly and make sure you are well presented. In no circumstances should you chewing gum and your mobile phone should be switched off.

Take reassurance from knowing that your interviewer can often be as nervous as you. Be polite, honest and open, maintaining eye contact with them. Talk as clearly and confidently as you can and if you don’t understand a question, ask for clarification. When answering, focus on positive experiences and be prepared to go into detail about your previous positions and your future aspirations.

There will be opportunity for you to ask questions about the organisation and the role. Take this chance to ask about things that are important to you. Such as, what is expected of you in the first 6 months? Or, what training opportunities are there? Or, what has the interviewers experience of working for the company been like? It’s an excellent way of showing genuine interest.

It’s important to leave the interview on a positive note. If you haven’t already discussed it, you may want to ask when you can expect to hear about their final decision. When it is time to leave, smile and thank them for seeing you. Shake hands firmly and confidently, and if you have enjoyed discussing the job, tell them.
