Job summary

Morson Edge is recruiting for an Interconnects Cable and Harness Design Engineer in the Manchester area. The role is hybrid, 2–3 days on site with travel to Stevenage if not based locally, and an initial 6-month contract inside IR35 at about £50 per hour umbrella.

You will design electrical interconnects for power, signal and data transmission, create schematics, define harness definitions, and support manufacturing and testing activities.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years using Visio and HarnWare; strong electrical schematic skills.
• Define, deploy and refine processes within Visio/HarnWare including topology and 2D drawings.
• Understand product data and change management in Windchill or similar.
• Design cable assemblies based on current, screening, signal types, volt drop, EMC and environmental constraints.
• Experience with cable harness production engineering and supplier engagement.
• Defining work packages and leading interconnects/harness design in a multi-disciplinary team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication to influence partners.

Responsibilities

• Interpret subsystem requirements to generate electrical schematics and cable design definitions in Visio & HarnWare.
• Investigate cable problems and develop solutions individually or in a project team.
• Support manufacturing to resolve issues and assist in product trials.

Interconnects Cable and Harness Design Engineer

Hybrid working – 2 – 3 days on site (further travel to Stevenage required if not based there)

Overview of Department:

A leading defence client has a fantastic opportunity for an Interconnects Design Engineer to work within our growing Interconnects team designing bespoke electrical interconnects / cables suitable for the transmission of power, signal and data within and between subsystems in our products, developing and designing Test Equipment solutions for the next generation of weapons.

Responsibilities:

To do this you will need to interpret sub-system requirements and, from these, generate electrical schematics and cable design definitions on Microsoft Visio & HarnWare work packages. You will need to be able to carry out investigations into a full range of cable problems and issues; developing and preparing solutions, either individually or as a member of a project team. The role also includes support to manufacturing in order to resolve any manufacturing issues, as well as supporting functional and environmental product trials.

Skillset / Experience required:

Individuals will need to have demonstrable experience in cable / harness / interconnects design, using relevant design packages such as Visio and HarnWare. The ideal candidate will have:

• A minimum 2 years' experience in the use of Visio and related products (Harnware).
• A proven ability to define, deploy, and refine processes and best practices within Visio and Harnware. – including; electrical topology, wiring schematics and 2D manufacturing drawing processes and standards.
• Thorough understanding of product data management and change management within Windchill or similar.
• The ability to design cable assemblies based upon electrical constraints such as current, screening, signal types, volt drop, EMC and environmental requirements.
• An appreciation of cable assembly production/process engineering.

Due to the nature of our work, experience of military Defence Standards and a working knowledge of D38999 connectors in support of cable harness manufacture is highly desirable.

• Ideally Degree/HND/HNC qualified plus significant experience in Interconnects/Harness Design and Development.
• The ability to lead interconnects/harness design work packages and have experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team with the awareness and understanding of the challenges that this may bring.
• Excellent verbal communication, negotiation and influencing skills with the capability to write clear and concise engineering documentation.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal with the ability to influence and negotiate with partners across the business.
• Experience of supplier engagement and development across internal and external multi-disciplinary teams.
