Job summary

James Fisher and Sons plc seeks a Technical Author to join the Defence Engineering team at Westhill. You will create and amend Operating Manuals, Maintenance Manuals, Books of Reference and Advanced Information Leaflets, and support internal engineering publications.

The role focuses on JFD products (diving sets, rebreathers, hyperbaric rescue) and broader engineering documents. You will use Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker and Adobe Acrobat, sourcing content from engineering, production and

Qualifications

• Technical writing qualification or equivalent industry experience.
• Mechanical background and/or Electrical background.
• Experience producing documents for defence, diving or marine sectors.
• Significant document design and production skills.
• Strong ability to generate and check documentation and publications.
• Proficient with Word, FrameMaker and Acrobat.
• Familiar with Word templates and styles.
• Knowledge of industry standards (S1000D, ASD-STE100, DEF STAN 00-601).
• Knowledge of current and upcoming documentation packages and add-ons.
• Willing to travel to local or overseas sites if required.
• Experience with DMSs.

Responsibilities

• Create and amend OMs, MMs, BRs and AILs.
• Source technical content via liaison with engineering, production and suppliers.
• Collaborate with drafting staff to produce graphical content.
• Take photos for inclusion in documents.
• Deliver outputs to client requirements (print, PDF, etc).
• Use JFD documentation templates and style guidelines.
• Record creation/amendment details in PLM/DMS.
• Create Engineering Change Notes when amending documents.
