Job summary

Rethink Mental Illness is seeking a Housing Team Leader in Wells to lead our housing support services for adults with mental health needs. The role is part-time (24 hours per week, Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm) with a full-time equivalent salary of £26,457 per annum.

A full UK driving licence, access to a vehicle and valid business motor insurance are essential. Based at Keward House, Burcott Road and Mendip Outreach Service, you will supervise staff, oversee tenancy sign-ups, inspections and rent

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting people with mental illness in housing or similar setting.
  • Excellent administration, organisation and planning skills.
  • Proficiency with IT systems including Microsoft Office, email and internet.
  • Solid understanding of tenancy/housing management, lettings procedures and related legislation.
  • Knowledge of Welfare Benefits, Housing Benefit and Universal Credit.
  • Understanding of health and safety and risk management.
  • Strong customer service and clear communication across levels.
  • Ability to motivate people and deliver positive outcomes.
  • Excellent written literacy and reporting abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt quickly.
  • Commitment to collaborative working with colleagues and partners.
  • Comfortable with lone working and self-management.
  • Have own transport.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the staff, assign tasks and monitor performance to meet service objectives.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues, provide supervision and support professional development.
  • Support recruitment, including interviewing, onboarding and inducting staff and volunteers.
  • Deliver effective housing management: tenancy sign-ups, move-ins, compliance, and re-lets.
  • Carry out property inspections, identify repairs and coordinate maintenance actions.
  • Manage rent processes, arrears monitoring, tenant support and rent banking procedures.
  • Respond to anti-social behaviour, investigate reports and implement warnings.
  • Collaborate with partners and agencies to enhance tenant support.
  • Provide intensive housing management for tenants with complex needs and mental ill health.
  • Assess risks and needs using person-centred approaches to support tenants.
  • Maintain accurate data and reporting in organisational systems (e.g., HIVE).
  • Drive service quality by identifying improvements and keeping the team updated on developments.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and foster a high-performing team culture.

Join Our Team as a Housing Team Leader

Location: Wells, Somerset.

Role: Part-time, 24 hours per week - Monday-Friday (9am-5pm)

Full-time equivalent salary £26, 457 per annum.

As a Housing Team Leader you will support and work as part of our teams across Keward House, Burcott Road and Mendip Outreach Service, delivering safe, high-quality and person-centred housing support for adults with mental health needs.

Keward House provides 19 rooms across four shared suites, Burcott Road offers 6 self-contained flats, and Mendip Outreach supports people living independently in the community. The services help individuals sustain accommodation, develop independent living skills and move towards greater independence, with support available for up to two years.

What you will do and achieve as a Housing Team Leader:
  • Lead and manage the staff, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring service objectives are met.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues, providing individual and group supervision and supporting professional development.
  • Support recruitment, including interviewing, onboarding, and inducting new staff and volunteers.
  • Deliver effective housing management, including tenancy sign-ups, move-ins, compliance, and property re-lets.
  • Carry out property inspections, identify repairs, and coordinate maintenance action.
  • Manage rent processes, including arrears monitoring, tenant support, and following rent banking procedures.
  • Respond to anti-social behaviour, investigating reports and implementing warning procedures.

  • Provide intensive housing management to tenants with complex needs and mental ill health, promoting independence and tenancy sustainment.
  • Assess risks and needs, using person-centred approaches to support tenants effectively.
  • Maintain accurate data and reporting, ensuring compliance with organisational systems (e.g., HIVE).
  • Drive service quality, identifying improvements, supporting innovation, and ensuring the team are updated on service developments.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and contribute to a positive, high-performing team culture.
Essential experience, skills required for this role:
  • I have experience of providing support to people with a mental illness in a comparable role, preferably in a housing environment.
  • I have excellent administration, organisation and planning skills.
  • I am competent in the use of IT systems including Microsoft applications, email and internet.
  • I have a good understanding of tenancy/housing management practice, lettings procedures, relevant legislation and current issues within the housing sector
  • I have a good understanding of Welfare Benefits, Housing Benefit and Universal Credit
  • I have a good understanding of health and safety and risk management.
  • I am experienced in providing a first-class customer service and I can communicate effectively at different levels, face to face, written word and over the telephone.
  • I exercise good judgment and to look positively for solutions rather than obstacles
  • Ability to motivate people and achieve positive outcomes
  • I have excellent communication and literacy skills, able to produce clear, concise reports, correspondence and notes.
  • I enjoy working in a fast-paced busy environment.
  • I am committed to collaborative working internally with colleagues and externally with partners to ensure a quality service is delivered.
  • I am comfortable with lone working
  • I have my own transport
