Job summary

Castle Howard in York is seeking a diligent, enthusiastic person to join our Household Team. You will help care for and present the estate's interiors and visitor spaces to the highest standards and contribute to a welcoming atmosphere for guests and events.

The role focuses on cleaning visitor facilities and staff areas, supporting housekeeping and facilities teams, and maintaining presentation across the historic site.

Qualifications

• Deliver exceptionally high standards of cleanliness and presentation.
• Positive, reliable and flexible approach to work.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent attention to detail in all duties.
• Physically capable of manual cleaning tasks.
• Respect for working within a historic environment.
• Experience in hospitality, hotels, visitor attractions or heritage is advantageous but not essential.
• Full training will be provided.

Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain visitor facilities, offices and staff areas.
• Ensure a high standard of presentation throughout visitor routes, interiors and exhibition spaces.
• Proactively monitor visitor facilities.
• Assist with room preparation for tours, events and private functions.
• Work with the Collections team to help care for the collections and winter cleaning.
• Support housekeeping operations during peak visitor periods and events.
• Support facilities to maintain high presentation standards across the site.
• Monitor cleaning stock levels and report maintenance concerns; follow safe practices.
• Collaborate with colleagues across Estate and House teams.

This is a unique opportunity to work within one of the UK's most celebrated historic houses. Helping to care for and present it's extraordinary interiors and visitor spaces to the highest standards.

The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring Castle Howard remains welcoming, immaculate and beautifully presented for visitors, guests and private events throughout the year.

The Role

• Cleaning and maintaining visitor facilities, offices and staff areas
• Ensuring a high standard of presentation throughout the visitor route, historic interiors and exhibition spaces
• Proactive monitoring of visitor facilities
• Assisting with room preparation for tours, events and private functions
• Working with the Collections team to help care for the collections and take an active role in the winter cleaning schedule
• Supporting housekeeping operations during peak visitor periods and special events
• Supporting the facilities team to ensure high standards of presentation are maintained across the site
• Monitoring cleaning stock levels and reporting maintenance concernsFollowing safe working practices and conservation-aware cleaning methods
• Working collaboratively with colleagues across the wider Estate and House teams

About You

• We are looking for someone who:
• Takes pride in delivering exceptionally high standards of cleanliness and presentation
• Has a positive, reliable and flexible approach to work

• Has excellent attention to detail
• Is physically capable of carrying out manual cleaning duties
• Is respectful of working within a historic environment
• Previous housekeeping or cleaning experience is desirable, although full training will be provided
• Experience within hospitality, hotels, visitor attractions or heritage settings would be advantageous but is not essential.

Hours

30 hours per week

Weekend and bank holiday working will be required as part of a rota.
