Youth Hostels Association (England & Wales) is seeking a Hostel Manager for YHA The Sill at Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland. The role oversees day-to-day hostel operations, staff and volunteers, and guest services, ensuring a high standard of hospitality and budgeting discipline.

Based at the flagship 88-bed hostel near Hadrian's Wall, the post offers a demanding yet rewarding lifestyle with strong community impact and opportunities for growth within YHA's network.

Qualifications

• Proven experience of working within the hospitality industry – hotels, cafés, hostels
• Experience of people management - recruitment, induction, development, conducting reviews and managing performance
• Excellent customer service skills – experience of handling difficult situations
• Ability to manage varying pressures, include peaks in workload demands – can prioritise, able to deal with conflicting duties
• Food safety level 2 and APLH level 2 qualifications (desirable)
• Basic IT skills (ideally Microsoft Office) – able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel
• Experience of managing P&Ls (profit and loss) and budgets – cash handling, managing a budget
• Knowledge and understanding of the core purpose of YHA – what YHA does and how we do it
• Demonstration of our HEART values – they’re part of everything we do, and we look for people who bring them to life in their everyday work

Permanent, fixed contract

42.5 hours per week

£35,655 - £41,949 per annum

Friends, Romans, Countrymen; lend me your ears. YHA The Sill at Hadrian's Wall are recruiting for a new Hostel Manager to bolster our ranks.

As Hostel Manager you'll be the chief centurion, running this flagship 88-bed 4-star youth hostel that sits just a stone's throw away from the most breathtaking section of Hadrian's Wall. Each year, over 10,000 people from around the world set out to walk the Hadrian's Wall Path. They are drawn here by the beautiful scenery, the awe-inspiring history, the remote charm, and to sample the famous Northumbrian hospitality. They are joined by thousands of wide-eyed primary-school children who visit us for residential trips, supporting their learning and creating life-long memories.

Could you be the person to welcome them? The person to ensure the hostel is looking it's best and that all the cogs and wheels that make up the hostel machine are greased and turning properly? The position is demanding but, like all YHA positions, working with us is not just a job - it's a lifestyle. Walk out of the door and straight into the footsteps of the Legions. Hadrian's Wall itself, The Great Whin Sill, Sycamore Gap, Steel Rigg and the Pennine Way are all just a short walk from the hostel. Some of the UK's most important archaeological sites are on our doorstep, including Vindolanda, Housesteads, Birdoswald and the Roman Army Museum. History Buffs are in for a treat!

Our remote and tranquil countryside location is ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. But rest assured, we're just 35 miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne city centre, and well connected by bus and rail services. What will you be doing as a Hostel Manager?

We are a friendly team and will provide the training required for you to undertake the role. However, there is plenty for you to get stuck into from day one, including:

• Achievement of targets across all aspects of the hostel operation including food and beverage. You will be accountable for maximising as well as controlling expenditure.
• Managing a team of employees and volunteers.
• Contributing to the team effort in the day-to-day operation of the hostel, undertaking any tasks required, e.g. housekeeping, reception, food and beverage duties.

What Skills and Experience do you need to be a Hostel Manager?

Our Hostel Managers are responsible for the line management of the teams within their own hostels, along with the management of occasional volunteers. They are also responsible for managing the operational budget and the safeguarding of all guests.

To provide this service we are looking for candidates who have:
