Job summary

YHA Keswick is seeking a Duty Manager to support the Hostel Manager in a busy Lake District hostel. The role covers reception, kitchen, housekeeping and guest services, with duties shared across a warm, hands-on team.

You will supervise daily operations, guide staff, manage check-ins/outs, assist in food service, and stand in for the Hostel Manager when needed. The position is permanent with a flexible pattern and requires at least 25 hours weekly.

Qualifications

• Experience in hospitality or customer service, including the management and delivery of a quality service.
• Experience in managing a team – experience of leading others, providing guidance to members of your team (desirable).
• Food safety level 2 and APLH level 2 qualifications (desirable).
• Ability to manage varying pressures, include peaks in workload demands – can prioritise, able to deal with conflicting duties.
• Basic IT skills (ideally Microsoft Office) – able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the smooth running of the hostel on a daily basis across reception, kitchen, and housekeeping.
• Use systems for guest check-ins/check-outs, F&B sales and other management functions.
• Carry out housekeeping duties to ensure a clean environment for visitors.
• Assist in food preparation and serving with warmth and hospitality.
• Deputise for Hostel/Deputy Manager in their absence.

What will you be doing as a Duty Manager?

We are a friendly team and will provide the training required for you to undertake the role. However, there is plenty for you to get stuck into from day one, including:

• Guiding and supporting team members working in all areas of the hostel, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
• Using our systems for efficient guest check-ins and check-outs, food and beverage sales and service and other management functions.
• Carrying out housekeeping duties, ensuring a comfortable, clean environment for all visitors.
• Assisting in the preparation of food and serving food and drinks with genuine warmth, hospitality, and pride that will influence in more sales.
• Deputising for the Hostel/Deputy Manager, managing the daily hostel operation in their absence.

What Skills and Experience do you need to be a Duty Manager?

Our Duty Managers are responsible for the line management of the teams within their own hostels, along with the management of occasional volunteers. They are also responsible for managing the operational budget and the safeguarding of all guests.

To provide this service we are looking for candidates who have:

• Experience of working face-to-face with customers
• Experience in hospitality or customer service, including the management and delivery of a quality service
• Experience of managing a team – experience of leading others, providing guidance to members of your team (desirable)
• Food safety level 2 and APLH level 2 qualifications (desirable)
• Ability to manage varying pressures, include peaks in workload demands – can prioritise, able to deal with conflicting duties
• Basic IT skills (ideally Microsoft Office) – able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel
• Knowledge and understanding of the core purpose of YHA – what YHA does and how we do it
