Job summary

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Waste Operative to join the portering team. The role involves collecting waste from wards and departments, and moving it to the recycling station according to set schedules across a 24-hour period.

The job is physical and busy, with new starters shadowing an experienced operative during training. Applicants should have waste services experience and be able to work without supervision.

Qualifications

• GCSE standard or equivalent.
• Previous experience of waste services.
• Proven ability to work without supervision.
• Good communication and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

• Collect waste streams generated by wards and departments
• Transport waste to the waste compound over a 24-hour period
• Transfer different waste types to set schedules and timescales
• Use various disposal and transport methods, with mechanical aids available
• Follow trust policies and procedures for manual handling and health and safety
• Communicate verbally with the Portering Supervisor and colleagues
• Communicate with clinical and non-clinical staff, patients and visitors to understand their needs
