Job summary

East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a Hospital Porter to support the Portering Department at Conquest Hospital, working on an alternating shift pattern across 0800-1600 and 1430-0000.

You will assist with mortuary access, deliveries of internal specimens, and the movement of patient-related equipment, while maintaining confidentiality and acting calmly in emergencies.

Qualifications

• Experience in hospital portering or similar role preferred.
• Able to follow instructions and maintain confidentiality.
• Good customer service and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Arrange access to the mortuary for authorised persons.
• Assist ambulance crews and funeral directors as needed during admissions.
• Provide collection and delivery service for internal specimens and theatre/x-ray lists.
• Ensure patient-related equipment is clean and in good repair; report defects.
• Deliver empty/full medical gas cylinders and report any defects.
• Respond promptly to emergencies and advise/assist as required.
• Work across Portering Department as part of a rotating shift pattern.

Job description

Mortuary Support

• In the absence of the mortuary assistant to: Arrange access to the mortuary for appropriate persons as directed.
• It may be necessary to assist Ambulance crews and/or Contracted Funeral Director during admission.

Deliveries

• To provide a collection and delivery service as required for internal specimens, theatre/x-ray lists.

Equipment, Furniture and Fittings

• Patient related equipment to be clean and in good repair, defects to be reported to the Duty Team Leader.
• Furniture and other equipment to be moved around the hospitals when and where required

Medical Gas

• The delivery of empty/full cylinders as required. This will include manifold rooms and associated piped gas systems.
• To attend to or report any defects with the medical gas supply as required.

Emergency Procedures

• To attend the appropriate ward or department immediately with the appropriate equipment and assistance upon hearing the alarms for: Cardiac arrest / Lucas Machine
• Major incident, Hazchem and CBRN incidents
• Traumas
• Helicopter landing
• Fire alarm
• Patient Collapse

Monday to Sunday 0800-1600 and 1430-0000 on a alternating shift pattern Will also be trained to work in the waste department to cover shifts as and when required
