Job summary

Ashton Recruitment Ltd. is recruiting on behalf of our client for an experienced Highway Engineer to join the Area Operations team in Belfast.

The role will oversee maintenance programmes, inspections, defect repairs and improvement projects, ensuring work is delivered safely and in line with contractual requirements. The successful candidate will report to the Project Manager and work with operational teams and subcontractors to plan, procure and manage works, maintaining safety, quality and

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a relevant discipline.
• Previous experience in a related engineering or highway operations role.
• Sound knowledge of Health & Safety requirements.
• Willingness to work outside normal hours and participate in on-call rota.
• Understanding of highway asset maintenance and related works processes.
• Strong planning and organisational skills.
• Good computer literacy.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong negotiation and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee highway operations and maintenance activities in line with DBFO1 contract requirements.
• Ensure inspections and defect repairs are completed across allocated asset classes.
• Manage major maintenance, rehabilitation projects and minor additional works.
• Maintain high standards of Health & Safety across all activities.
• Plan operational works using risk assessments and cost comparisons.
• Monitor costs and ensure accurate cost capture for forecasting and budgeting.
• Maintain quality management standards and ISO/NHS schemes compliance.
• Use RMMS database to maintain network information and generate work orders.
• Develop annual works and inspection programmes with the Operations team.
• Procure works and coordinate project delivery.
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and service delivery.
• Participate in regular works planning meetings with the wider team.
• Participate in Duty Officer on-call rota and outside hours when required.
