Job summary

National Grid in the United Kingdom is seeking two skilled engineers for a hands-on role maintaining critical electrical transmission equipment. You will work outdoors, often at height, carrying out maintenance, repairs and overhauls to keep substations operating safely and reliably.

The role emphasizes practical mechanical and electrical skills, with training provided at the Eakring Training Centre and opportunities for overtime, a company vehicle from home, and a generous pension.

Qualifications

• Recognised apprenticeship in Engineering/Mechanical or NVQ/Level 3 with relevant industrial fitting experience.
• Strong mechanical/electrical maintenance, overhaul or installation experience.
• Experience stripping, rebuilding and repairing plant and equipment.
• Confidence using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring equipment and torque tools.
• Proactive fault finding and problem solving.
• Commitment to safe working practices and ability to work at height.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Confidence using a computer and iPad.
• Residence within 40 minutes of listed sites (Southampton, Bournemouth or Portsmouth).
• Experience on high-voltage equipment and in power generation/utilities (nice to have).
• NEBOSH or IOSH qualifications (nice to have).

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair and overhaul electrical equipment in substations.
• Strip, inspect and rebuild mechanical components.
• Diagnose faults and carry out repairs.
• Install new or refurbished equipment.
• Support planned maintenance and emergency breakdown response.
• Perform routine inspections and condition monitoring.
